Step-by-step guide to installing hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring transforms a space. It’s warm, timeless, and adds real value to your home. But can you install it yourself? Absolutely. With the right tools, patience, and attention to detail, you can lay down a stunning hardwood floor without hiring a pro. Follow this step-by-step guide to get it done.

Gather your tools and materials

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need. Here’s your checklist:

  • Hardwood flooring planks
  • Underlayment (if needed)
  • Moisture barrier (for concrete subfloors)
  • Flooring nailer or stapler
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk line
  • Level
  • Pry bar
  • Spacers
  • Rubber mallet
  • Saw (miter and table saws work best)

Got it all? Good. Let’s get to work.

Prepare the subfloor

A smooth, clean subfloor is key to a flawless hardwood flooring installation. If you’re working over concrete, you’ll need a moisture barrier. For plywood, check for loose nails and sand down any high spots. Make sure the floor is level—uneven subfloors lead to wobbly planks.

Acclimate the wood

Hardwood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes. Let the planks sit in the room for at least 72 hours before installation. Stack them with space in between for airflow. This step prevents gaps or buckling later.

Plan your layout

Before you start nailing boards down, plan your layout. Use a chalk line to mark your first row. If possible, run the boards parallel to the longest wall—this creates a more seamless look. Stagger the seams so they don’t line up in every row.

Install the first row

Start in a corner and place spacers against the wall to allow for expansion. Secure the first row by either nailing through the top (for the first row only) or using a flooring nailer at an angle through the tongue. Make sure everything is tight and straight before moving on.

Lay the rest of the planks

Once the first row is solid, work your way across the room. Use a rubber mallet to snug the boards together before nailing. Keep staggering the seams—this makes the floor stronger and more visually appealing.

  • If using tongue-and-groove planks, insert the tongue into the groove before nailing.
  • If working with floating wood flooring, follow the manufacturer’s click-lock system.

Cut and fit the final row

The last row might need trimming to fit. Use a table saw to cut the boards to size. If the gap is tight, use a pry bar to wedge them into place.

Install baseboards and clean up

Once all planks are installed, remove the spacers and add baseboards or quarter-round trim to cover expansion gaps. Give the floor a final sweep and admire your work.
