What Does Amarillo Home Decor Have in Common With a Television Show?

Hint: Both Have Supporting Actors and Major Players, Like Flooring, Furnishings and Accessories

The 80/20 rule seems to apply to everything from eating habits to time management and home decor! It used to be that you’d walk into a house and see one style with everything perfectly matching, but no more.

Today, it’s not unusual to mix styles, with 80 percent being the major style, while 20 percent is something else. It’s no longer an all or nothing deal, and that’s what makes the home eclectic and interesting. Do it carefully, though, or you’ll just end up with a confusing, disjointed and cluttered mess on your hands.

Gowdy Flooring, a prestigious flooring store in the Texas Panhandle with a large inventory, gives you some additional tips on coordinating styles. Think of:

●Balance;. For instance, if the flooring in your Amarillo living room is in a color on the cool side of the color wheel, such as blue, you might want to use warm accent colors like red or yellow.

●Scale and proportion: For example, if you want 80 percent of your Amarillo kitchen to be farmhouse style, you would with the largest square footage, the floor, plus large pieces of furniture, such countertops and cabinets, also in that style. Grey wood or wood-look flooring is great for farmhouse style.

Then, if you want to include another style, say retro, accessorize with smaller pieces, such as Coca-Cola signs, stainless steel lighting or some 1950’s model toy cars, to make that the 20 percent.

●Layout: If your living room is Southwest style with a flooring installation that’s some kind of natural stone, and it opens to the family room, where the floor is a fun and funky pattern like checkerboard or boomerang, it’s just going to lack any cohesiveness.

●Focal point: Got an amazing sofa in a wonderful, vibrant color? Make that the point on which everyone’s eye will go when entering the room, then add flooring in a complementary color, Amarillo, and accessorize (using smaller pieces) around it.
