How to Choose the Best Amarillo Flooring for Walkers and Wheelchairs

Much has been written about how to choose the right flooring for various circumstances that may affect which type of flooring is most desirable for a home, but Gowdy Flooring noticed that there has been little said on the topic of how to choose the right type of flooring for Amarillo households, that have family members with mobility concerns.

We put together this quick guide to help you choose which type of flooring installation is most suitable to accommodate people who use walkers or wheelchairs in their home, and which flooring is best to accommodate those mobility devices most safely.

The criteria we are using for a given material's desirability and compatibility with mobility devices is based on the fact that the right flooring will be:

• Durable Enough to Stand Up to Wheels and Walkers

• Easy to Maintain

• Resistant to Slipping

• Level

• Low-Polish

• Able to Smoothly Transition Between Rooms

With those points in mind, here are the best flooring options for those with mobility considerations:

Slip Resistant Tile

Tile checks all of the boxes in our list of desirable qualities for homes with mobility devices. Low-maintenance, availability of low-polish tiles, smooth transitions, outrageous durability, and supremely level, this is pretty much the perfect choice for homes with mobility device users.

The only major drawback many would see with tile flooring, is that it can be slippery when wet, but there are slip-resistant tiles available to assuage this concern. You'd have a hard time finding a better flooring material for your mobility device using family members, than slip-resistant tile.

Hardwood

Hardwood flooring also hits all the important criteria for a good mobility device friendly floor, except that it can suffer wear and tear from wheelchair wheels. This is easy to get around, by simply choosing a hardwood species that ranks high on the Janka hardness scale.

Ask your flooring store representative about which hardwoods are ranked highest on this scale, and you should be fine going with one of those- Just make sure you go with a low-polish or matte finish.

Luxury Vinyl Tile

Luxury vinyl tile is another material that checks off all of the boxes in our list of criteria, as long as you are sure to go with a low-polish or matte coating. This is an excellent choice for those who prefer the look of hardwood, but don't have the budget to make the initial investment in it.
