Are You Making These Mistakes With Your New Amarillo Flooring?

Don’t be scared with this question! But your floor is really the star of your home, the thing that impacts the entire design of a room.

Chances are, it was also a sizable investment. So you want to keep your flooring installation looking gorgeous for a long, long time, right?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and we all tend to do things that might seem like a good thing, making us think we’re taking care of our things, but can actually damage them.

Here are just three things Gowdy Flooring, one of the largest flooring stores in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle, says to never do to your Amarillo Flooring:

1. Don’t use just anything to clean it, even if the sign on the label says “safe for…” Something can be safe, meaning that it won’t cause damage, but it can dull or distort the color (such as those waxy, shine-promoting cleaners), and that negatively impacts the appearance.

It’s also not a one-size-fits all when it comes to carpets. Something can be “safe” for one style, but terrible for another. There’s also a sort of backlash because, over the long-term, chemicals can build up and have the exact opposite of your goal; that is, they’ll make the carpet vulnerable to stains.

Always check with the manufacturer to find one that’s recommended.

2. Don’t track in dirt and debris on your shoes. Dirt can actually scratch hardwood. Even though Amarillo itself can be pretty dry, moisture can get pumped up from the Gulf, so better safe than sorry. Did you know that you can drag in moisture with the dirt, and that moisture can contribute to mold and mildew on your carpets?

3. Don’t forget the importance of professional carpet cleaning. The pros use high- powered machines that can get deep into fibers. While the good news is that the fibers will trap all of the dirt and pollution and particles (like insect fragments!)(, the ONLY way to remove them is with powerful machines, not those rental steam cleaners you find in supermarkets or hardware stores. The pros also get the carpet and padding dry right away--it only takes about 12 hours for mold to start growing. It goes a long way toward keeping your carpet beautiful and extending its life.

4. Don’t neglect to wipe up spills….immediately! Even with stain-resistant products like laminates, you don’t want to wait for it to set, and any liquid that stays too long on hardwood can cause damage.
